Beware of System fraud

Telephone fraud is becoming an increasing problem. In recent months two of EMtel's customers have now been targeted. We don't want this to happen to anyone else, so we are taking immediate action.

Beware of Personal Numbers

It can be very difficult to follow Ofcom's logic at times. For example; they insisted on a reduction of the cost of calling 0870 numbers, which used to cost 6.6ppm, but were more than happy when many of the call centres using 0870 numbers switched to 0871, which would now cost the caller 10ppm. Their decision to allow Personal Numbers is equally baffling.

In the early 1990s, in an attempt to simplify everything, all mobile numbers were changed to have a '07' prefix and all Premium Rate Numbers would start with '09'. So long as the caller understood numbers starting '09' were likely to be expensive, he or she could make a decision on whether or not to call them.

A limitation of the '07' code is that the cost could vary significantly depending on the mobile network called, but overall the call costs are now coming in line - that is until Ofcom allowed for Personal Numbers, which also start '07'. You may think you're calling a mobile, but you're not. You are, in fact, calling a Premium Rate Number and the costs can be quite staggering - up to £4 per minute in some cases and, because the receiver gets money when the number is called, many of them are encouraging calls to their number. It works because the caller believes they are calling a mobile, rather than a Premium Rate Number.

Fibre to Premises means it will be digital all the way. Small scale trials are currently underway and a more general rollout is expected to start soon. We are also monitoring all of the lines of people who have expressed an interest so we'll be able to talk to you about the latest technologies as soon as they are available in your area.

Directory Enquiries
Calls to 118118 have recently risen again. Calls now cost more than £2 making 118118 just about the most expensive directory enquiry service ever. Cheaper alternatives are available but better still, www.192.com is completely free.
